Goodbye (and good riddance) Jacques

After years of being a general pain in the @ss for the United States, French President Jacques Chirac will soon be succeeded by a new leader. According to this article, many of the candidates will be open to strengthening France’s relationship with the US.

I have to admit a real dislike for Chirac. His only claim to fame is that he likes to “stand up against the US.” Which apparently many French saw as an asset… Like an opposition democrat in the US, he was great at dissent, but had no substance of his own.

I’ve been to France, a couple times (and would love to return). I have the utmost respect for the French and their culture (as do I think most Americans). And I want to see France prosper. But I think, as history has shown, it should thrive as a partner of the US, not as a competitor.
